Nanotechnology is defined as the application of nano-scale materials toward various fields including petroleum, agriculture, marine, cosmetics and medicine. Nanomedicine, which involves the application of nanotechnologies to medicine, is a promising and rapidly field aimed toward quality improvement and precision of the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of human diseases.
It involves the synthesis and use of various types of the synthesized nanomaterial including polymeric nanoparticles, lipid-based nanodroplet/nanoparticles, carbon-based nanoparticles and metal-based nanoparticles.
Nanomedicine platforms have been applied as drug delivery carriers, vaccines production, diagnostics and imaging platforms, wearables, high-throughput screening tests. The key idea behind drug delivery is the development of magic bullet formulations that enhance healthcare services through minimizing undesired side effects and improve therapeutic efficacy toward complex diseases such as cancer.
The course will focus on introducing and discussing the evolution of nanomedicine. Then, the attendees will be briefed about the important classes of nanomaterials that have been applied to various fields including medicine.
Afterwards, participants will be exposed to synthesis and characterization methods of nanomaterials knowledge, Then, drug delivery concepts using these nanomaterials will be delivered.
Finally, the basics of formulation and pharmaceutics sciences including solubility, absorption, adsorption, thermodynamics and stability will be introduced.
By the end of this course, the participants will be able to demonstrate the concept of:
- Define the history and state of nanomedicine
- Differentiate the classes of nanomaterials
- Adapt the application of nanomaterials toward various fields
- Compare the different synthesis concepts of nanomaterials
- Assess the characterization methods of nanomaterials
- Integrate drug delivery and its concepts including targeting, encapsulation and nanomaterials fate.
- State the fundamental of formulation and pharmaceutics sciences
Basic University training in Biological and Medical Sciences.
