Toxicology & Forensic

Forensic toxicology is the application of toxicology for purposes of the law. Forensic toxicologists detect the presence or absence of drugs or poisons and then attempt to interpret the results within the context of the investigation. This course is structured to provide the basic concepts of analytical chemistry as it applies to drug and body fluid analyses. A series of case studies will be used in this course.

  • Describe and demonstrate the most important medical, scientific, and legal definitions, concepts, techniques, and methods used in forensic investigation.
  • Explain and discuss the principles of medical, scientific, and technical evidence gathering, as well as the presentation of such evidence in legal proceedings, and evaluate and critically analyse the evidential significance of various evidence types;
  • Demonstrate the limitations of medical and scientific investigation at a crime scene, including sample collection, sample preservation, and evidence marking and packaging.
  • Examine and explain the fundamental principles of DNA fingerprinting, including DNA isolating and other techniques.
